Every minute, around 20 individuals in the United States suffer physical abuse from an intimate partner, culminating in over 10 million affected women and men annually. This staggering statistic underscores a severe societal issue. In this alarming context, Lovern J. Gordon emerges as a pivotal figure of resilience and hope, dedicating her efforts to fight domestic violence through her non-profit organisation, the Love Life Now Foundation, Inc. (LLN).
Meeting the Sur-THRIVER
“Our voices can transform silence into action and pain into power. We can win the battle by standing united against domestic violence”
– Lovern J. Gordon
Lovern’s journey is deeply intertwined with the cause she champions. Hailing from Trinidad, her childhood was marred by the harrowing spectre of domestic abuse, as she witnessed her father’s brutal mistreatment of her mother. Later, as a young adult in the United States, Lovern herself became a survivor of abuse, enduring a tumultuous two-year relationship that commenced when she was just 21. Her personal experiences fuel her unwavering commitment to raise awareness and provide support to those ensnared in the cycle of abuse.
As the President and Founder of Love Life Now Foundation, Inc. (LLN), Lovern is a recognised figure in the fight against domestic violence, appearing on national platforms such as CBS’s “This Morning” and locally on NBC’s “This is New England.” Her international reach extends to appearances on Trinidad’s TV6 News. Her advocacy efforts are also documented in publications like Huffington Post Magazine and Boston Voyager Magazine, and she has co-authored the book #SheWins.
Recognised as a ‘Hero Among Us’ by the Boston Celtics, Lovern’s commitment to social change spans several organisations. She serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for the Black Equipment Finance Network, and chairs the Massachusetts Women of Color Network (MAWOCN), which supports women of color leading in the sexual assault and domestic violence sectors in Massachusetts. Additionally, she contributes as an Advisory Board Member for the Tam Ky Project, dedicated to improving life for children and families in rural Vietnam affected by poverty, natural disasters, and disabilities.
Leveraging Beauty for Advocacy
A pivotal moment in Lovern’s advocacy came with her consecutive victories in beauty pageants in 2010. Harnessing the platform afforded by her titles, she seized the opportunity to amplify awareness about domestic violence. In 2011, the Love Life Now Foundation was born out of her fervent desire to effect tangible change and break the cycle of violence. Through LLN, Lovern endeavours to empower victims and survivors, amplifying their voices and providing a lifeline of support.
Holistic Approaches to Combating Domestic Violence
At the heart of LLN’s mission lies a multifaceted approach to raising awareness and facilitating change. The organisation serves as a guiding light, directing individuals toward vital resources and support systems for escaping abusive environments. Through a diverse array of community initiatives, including workshops and awareness campaigns, LLN strives to dismantle the stigma surrounding domestic violence and foster a culture of empowerment and solidarity.
Overcoming Challenges to Sustain Impact
“Empowering women of colour in leadership roles is crucial for addressing and solving issues in our communities effectively”
– Lovern J. Gordon
The journey towards effecting change is fraught with challenges, particularly in the realm of funding and sustainability. As a non-profit organisation, LLN relies heavily on donations and sponsorships to sustain its vital work. In the nascent stages, Lovern’s personal savings served as a lifeline for the organisation, underscoring her unwavering dedication to the cause. Over time, however, LLN has forged partnerships with companies that share its vision, ensuring the continuation of its vital mission.
Innovative Engagement in Awareness
Lovern believes in espousing an innovative approach to advocacy and change. Thus, central to LLN’s approach is a commitment to innovation and inclusivity. Rejecting a one-size-fits-all mentality, the organisation employs a diverse array of initiatives to engage communities and spark meaningful dialogue. From the Empowerment Fashion Show, featuring DV survivors as models, to the Heel-A-Thon Walk, LLN harnesses creativity to foster understanding and solidarity.
A Personal Mission Fueled by Determination
Despite the myriad responsibilities she shoulders as the organisation’s founder, Lovern remains steadfast in her commitment to serving those in need. Whether fielding calls on the organisation’s toll-free resource line or spearheading awareness campaigns, her dedication knows no bounds. For Lovern, success is not measured in tangible terms but rather in the transformative impact her work has on the lives of survivors.
Vision for the Future and Emphasis on Self-Care
Looking to the future, Lovern envisions a world where LLN’s initiatives serve as a blueprint for domestic violence agencies nationwide. The advent of the pandemic has opened new avenues for outreach, enabling LLN to extend its reach globally through virtual workshops and engagements. With the recent release of her memoir, “The Legacy He Left Me,” Lovern aims to amplify her voice and drive meaningful change on an international scale. Yet, amidst her tireless advocacy, Lovern recognises the importance of self-care and balance. Drawing from her own experiences of burnout, she emphasises the need for boundaries and prioritising personal well-being. For Lovern, self-care is not a luxury but a vital component of sustaining the fight for justice and empowerment.
Empowering Future Leaders
To aspiring changemakers, Lovern offers sage advice rooted in her own journey. She underscores the importance of seizing the present moment, surrounding oneself with supportive communities, and, above all, believing in one’s own capacity to effect change. Through her indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication, Lovern J. Gordon stands as a testament to the transformative power of advocacy and the enduring promise of hope.
