Jimmy Peyton was introduced to the public as the new Warren football coach. He was hired by the school board on Monday, and during Tuesday’s press conference he was formally introduced inside the high school’s commons area. When he stated what he knew about the Warriors’ returning prospects, two name simultaneously came to mind: Jason Williams and Trent Taylor. “They have an exceptionally high ceiling with lots of talent,” he reported.

Peyton had only good things to talk about them. “Taylor is 6ft 6. He has a great physique. And Williams is the second-rated back in Southeast Ohio, so I am really looking forward to that.”

Peyton, all-time leading passer at both Ironton High School and Joliet College (Ill.), is the type of person who could greatly benefit Taylor. On two occasions, Peyton was named an all-state quarterback at Ironton and led the Tigers to the Division V state championship game in 1999. His junior college career saw him lead Joliet College to the NJCAA championship.

As assistant coach, Peyton’s background is equally impressive. His offensive numbers glitter during his stops at Indian River High School (N.Y.), South Point High School (Ohio), Arizona Western College (JUCO), Garden City Community College (Kansas) and Ashland Paul Blazer High School (Ky.).

Peyton’s career also includes a brief stint at Missouri Military Academy as head coach. During Peyton’s maiden season, the academy finished 5-3 — the program’s first winning season in 34 years.

At the press conference, Peyton was accompanied by his wife Megan and a 13-year-old son named James.

Peyton did not shy away from attributing his success to his family. “My wife is the best thing that has happened to me. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be sitting here.”

Peyton has served as a Ranger in the United States Army for nine years. His coaching knowledge has subtle connections with his military career. Accountability, structure and discipline – these are three aspects necessary for this age group. “I think it will help create better young men and human beings.”

Peyton is hoping to restore stability for the Warren football program. He also wants to gain their trust and cement his legacy. “I want the kids to know and understand that the way we will be doing things will be the way it will be done for a long time.”
