Artificial Dyes to Disappear from Kraft Heinz Products by 2027

Kraft Heinz announces a major decision to remove artificial dyes from all U.S. products by 2027. This move supports the company’s long-term mission to offer wholesome and nutritious food options. The artificial dyes in food include synthetic FD&C colors, commonly found in processed beverages and snacks.

Brands like Jell-O, Kool-Aid, MiO, Jet-Puffed, and Crystal Light will undergo this major formula update. Currently, about 10% of Kraft Heinz’s U.S. items use synthetic food dyes. However, the company plans to cut that number to zero. This transformation aligns with growing pressure from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and public health advocates.

In April, the FDA revealed a plan to phase out petroleum-based dyes across the U.S. food market. The banned dyes include red dye 40, yellow dye 5, yellow dye 6, blue dye 1, blue dye 2, green dye 2, and the already-restricted Red No. 3. These synthetic colors have long raised concerns about safety and nutrition.

Kraft Heinz had previously eliminated artificial colors and preservatives from its iconic macaroni and cheese. Their ketchup has never used artificial colors, signaling the company’s commitment to clean labels. Now, the company aims to extend those standards across its full product line.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA encouraged food giants to take initiative. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. discussed food dye elimination with leaders from top food companies. The meeting in March included representatives from Kraft Heinz, PepsiCo, General Mills, and more.

Despite uncertainties, the company remains confident in consumer support. Some may miss bright colors. Yet, many may welcome more natural-looking products with better nutritional value. Kraft Heinz believes this transition reflects consumer demand for transparency and quality.

Importantly, this decision follows years of preparation and reformulation. Over 1,000 recipe changes were made during the past five years. The company claims most products already use natural or no color at all.

Above all, Kraft Heinz remains committed to offering affordable and nutritious food to American families. With this dye removal, the company takes a bold step toward a healthier future. This plan will transform how popular brands are made, marketed, and consumed in the years ahead.
