The wave inclusion and diversity has long being overdue in the world of Hollywood. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the body that governs the operation of the Golden Globe Awards, announced that it was soon going to make changes to its operative protocols.

Details of the Policy Change Initiative

The statement released by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association states, “We at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are committed to transformational change. Effective immediately, the Board – in conclusion with outside advisors – will oversee reforms and be accountable for that change.” The forum has highlighted its future plan to achieve inclusion and diversity through a bullet point list of 6 points. It has expressed its commitment to hire an inclusion and diversity expert, engaging in outreach with Black and other underrepresented professionals, hiring a third-part law firm to review policies and come up with process for reporting violations of ethical standards, improving operation transparency and increasing opportunities for Black and other underrepresented students who are interested in international journalism.

Reasons for these Changes

This announcement and robust endeavor comes almost a week after the HFPA received criticism at the 78th Golden Globes by hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Moreover, the Time’s Up organization issued a letter that suggested the HFPA – the voting body of the Golden Globes – was not doing enough in terms of diversity and inclusion. The organization’s President and CEO, Tina Tchen stated, “The problems with the HFPA cannot be addressed simply by a search for new members who meet your self-declared membership criteria. That criteria reflects a fundamental lack of understanding of the problems at hand. Change only occurs from an awareness of larger cultural problems, as well as a long-term commitment to systemic change.” Thus, the drive to a more inclusive and diverse world of entertainment remains a dream to be achieved. And according to most commentators, this will require much more than simply implementing cosmetic changes. Deep-rooted bias has to be forlorn and discarded for any fruitful change to be noted in the near future.
