Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell Talk Surprising Depth in ‘Thunderbolts’

Marvel’s latest film, Thunderbolts, is proving to be a departure from the traditional superhero formula. With a focus on emotional depth and personal struggles, the movie introduces a more vulnerable side to its characters. Central to this shift are Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes and Wyatt Russell’s John Walker. The two characters, known for their complex backstories, explore themes of redemption, loneliness, and mental health in ways that diverge from typical superhero fare.

Wyatt Russell, known for his athletic background, is determined to make Thunderbolts a standout film. Speaking about his drive, Russell expressed, “I want to make you eat your words,” showing his passion to prove doubters wrong. His character, John Walker, takes on a deeper emotional journey, challenging preconceived notions of the disgraced former Captain America.

Stan’s portrayal of Bucky Barnes further explores the character’s evolution. As Congressman Barnes, Bucky attempts to redefine himself in a political role while still grappling with his past as the Winter Soldier. His character’s internal conflict is evident as he navigates the fine line between using his new position to keep an eye on Valentina and resorting to old instincts when needed. Stan reveals, “I think [Congress] is his way of trying to, in the legal and moral way, keep track of her.”

What truly sets Thunderbolts apart is its exploration of mental health. Russell shared that it was a surprise to see the film take such a route, emphasizing the psychological struggles of the characters rather than focusing solely on external threats. “This is not a primed movie,” said Russell. “It’s about people with main character syndrome who are forced to work together as a team, but don’t want to be.”

The film’s success also lies in the collaborative spirit on set. Stan and Russell both highlighted how the cast contributed ideas, shaping the film’s dynamic and making it feel authentic. Stan praised the inclusivity, noting that the creative process allowed them to bring a personal touch to their roles.

Thunderbolts is shaping up to be a groundbreaking entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With its emotional depth, character-driven storytelling, and unexpected twists, the film challenges the typical superhero narrative. Fans can look forward to a fresh perspective on familiar characters when Thunderbolts hits theaters on May 2.
