Switzerland has just launched the world’s steepest cable car, connecting Stechelberg and Mürren. This groundbreaking addition marks the completion of the first phase of the ambitious SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project. With a record-breaking gradient of 159.4%, this engineering marvel redefines alpine travel.
The cable car covers 775 meters of elevation over a span of 1,194 meters in just four minutes. Manufactured by Austria’s Carvatech, it can transport 85 passengers or 6.8 tonnes of cargo per trip. Its impressive capacity reaches up to 800 people per hour, making it a high-performance transit system for both locals and tourists.
One standout feature includes the advanced AURO (Autonomous Ropeway Operation) system. This cutting-edge technology uses cameras and sensors for a seamless, driverless experience. A fully automated robot manages cargo, synchronizing perfectly with passenger transport.
Additionally, Switzerland’s first Funifor cable car track has also opened, connecting Mürren and Birg. This system ensures year-round operations, even under extreme wind conditions. Its dual tracks operate independently, allowing uninterrupted service during maintenance.
The new stations showcase innovative designs with bright copper façades and panoramic views. At Stechelberg, the cable car exits through the roof, an ingenious solution for the steep incline. Guide wheels are visible on the roof, a homage to the historic Gimmelwald cable car.
Currently, the upper cableway section remains under construction, with the first Funifor track set to open by March 2025. The second track is expected by spring 2026, completing this revolutionary project.
For winter sports enthusiasts, both old and new cableways will operate simultaneously, ensuring smooth ski operations. The SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project promises unparalleled travel convenience and stunning vistas, setting new benchmarks in alpine adventure.
If you’re planning a winter trip, don’t miss this awe-inspiring experience. Switzerland’s latest marvel isn’t just a mode of transport—it’s a thrilling journey into the heart of the Alps.
