Apple Regains Top Spot in China’s Smartphone Market

iPhone sales in China grew substantially in May, becoming the leading smartphone market. In recent statistics, Apple recorded a 15% year-over-year increase in worldwide sales for April and May. This is its best two-month performance since the pandemic started. Particularly, iPhone sales in China played a significant role in driving this growth.

Outside of China, the expansion wasn’t exclusive to that country. Apple saw double-digit growth in India, Japan, and countries of the Middle East too. That means there is widespread demand across the globe for its products amidst stiff competition. Moreover, tariff avoiders contributed a small but significant margin to Apple’s performance.

China and the United States are Apple’s most powerful markets. Therefore, any sale fluctuations have a considerable impact by these two markets. Yet, the China strategy helped shift it ahead of domestic rivals. That is, strategic price reductions and promotional discounts on online outlets paid dividends.

For instance, Chinese websites discounted iPhones by as much as 2,530 yuan ($351) in May. This kind of pricing certainly lured quite a number of new consumers. Apple was therefore able to regain momentum in the market despite growing local brand pressure.

China’s overseas-branded phone imports increased modestly, according to government-linked data. They rose to 3.52 million units in April from 3.50 million units last year. The modest increase again indicates an uptrend for the recovery of international brands in China, with Apple at the forefront.

The iPhone 16 series wasn’t behind either. Its launch was accompanied by massive customer traffic, even during rainy days. Customers queued up in front of stores, indicating Apple’s continued brand loyalty and local relevance.

Up to this point, the second quarter is shaping up well for Apple’s iPhone division. The trend indicates that consumer sentiment is recovering, analysts claim. More importantly, the spike reaffirms Apple’s dominance in premium smartphone territory.

Apple’s deep discounting and expanding global presence drove its worldwide momentum. Its strategic concentration on China’s smartphone market was a huge sigh of relief. So, if it becomes a trend, Apple can potentially sustain its leadership well into the second half of the year.
