The Team Behind Akin Gump

The firm has a rich and colourful history. It was founded in 1945 in Texas. The story starts when former FBI agents Richard Gump and Robert Strauss started up a small legal practice in Dallas after World War 2. Originally, there were only 2 lawyers, but over the course of 75 years, the firm has become a legal behemoth on a global scale thanks to their 900 plus legal professionals and their 20 offices situated all over the globe. In 2012, the partnership of the firm elected Kim Koopersmith to serve as the chairperson of the firm. She succeeded R. Bruce McLean, who had guided the firm for 20 years, and became the first woman to chair the firm and one of the few women up to that time to head an AmLaw 50 law firm. In 2013, Akin Gump restructured their partnership hierarchy and adopted a “single tier” partnership structure. This new structure granted all partners equity. In doing so, they abandoned the more popular and typical “two tier” structure in which many partners have no equity interest.

Awards And Acknowledgements

If the contributions of the firm are not impressive, its list of accolades and awards surely is. Here is a quick glimpse at some of them. They have been awarded the “2022 Volunteer Award” by The Advocates for Human Rights, an independent, international human rights organisation, for its role in the report “A Rollback for Human Rights: The Istanbul Convention under Attack” and for “their tireless commitment to helping The Advocates expose far-right hate groups and their tactics.” In March, the firm won the Innovations in Pro Bono, Law Firm category. The firm has also been named to The American Lawyer’s A-List, the publication’s selection of the 20 top law firms in the United States. This marks the firm’s seventh appearance on this prestigious list in nine years.
