The first-ever World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA) will take place on September 27 in Belize, marking a significant moment for the global travel and tourism industry. This prestigious event, held in partnership with the World Travel Awards, will celebrate individuals and organisations that have made remarkable contributions to sustainability within the industry.
The ceremony is set to be hosted at the historic Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve, located in San Ignacio Town. This ancient Maya site, with temples dating back to 1,200 BC, offers a fitting location for an event focused on sustainable tourism. WSTHA organisers believe that the reserve reflects the ideals of responsible travel and is the perfect venue for recognising those dedicated to protecting the planet.
Celebrating Sustainability Leaders in Travel and Hospitality
Justin Cooke, Executive Vice-President of WSTHA, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, emphasising that excitement is building as the ceremony date approaches. He noted that Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve, known for its alignment with sustainable tourism values, is the ideal setting to honour those leading efforts to safeguard the future of travel and hospitality. The awards will recognise companies and individuals who have made significant strides toward ensuring a sustainable future for the industry.
Glenn Mandsiuk, CEO of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, reinforced the importance of these awards in setting a new industry standard. According to Mandsiuk, the winners will not only be celebrated for their accomplishments but will also be seen as pioneers driving transformative change in line with the vision of Net Positive Hospitality. These efforts are crucial steps in the broader goal of creating a more sustainable future for global travel and tourism.
Belize’s Commitment to Sustainability
Belize’s Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, highlighted the country’s pride in hosting the inaugural WSTHA event. He stated that the ancient Cahal Pech site would provide a stunning backdrop for the awards, which celebrate those making impactful changes in sustainable tourism. Mahler acknowledged the impressive contributions of all nominees and looks forward to sharing Belize’s own sustainability initiatives with a global audience.
With 21 categories, the WSTHA aims to spotlight leaders across the travel and hospitality industry who are driving positive change and setting new benchmarks in sustainability.
