Maria Sharapova Retires Quietly

Maria Sharapova, the Russian Lawn Tennis star unconventionally announced her farewell as she published a well-framed essay in Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines. She didn’t try to play in a farewell tour but bid adieu to the tennis court quietly.

She has an unfit shoulder which is restraining her from playing normally for a while and it would have been unethical to play with an unfit body.

She is one among the 11 women lawn tennis players to have won all four Grand Slam titles. She is also a former number one player and had a big influence on people’s life both while on the field or when off-field.

In her career spanning 15-years, she won 5 Grand Slams. She was born in Siberia as it was a safer place to be than the place where she was conceived, 40 miles from Chernobyl. She started playing international in 2004 when she was just 17.

As a tennis prodigy, she got to be the brand ambassador of Nike when she was just 11. Under her belt, there were three Grand Slams even before she turned 22.

She was tested positive for melodonium, a heart disease drug, which is prohibited by the NADA while she was at the Australian Open. In her defence, she said that the drug was prescribed to her by a doctor in 2005 in Moscow.

She was just 17 when she defeated Serena Williams in the Wimbledon Finals. In her whole career, she would end up winning just twice against the American Legend. Both the victories coming in 2004. Williams won 20 times against her. Throughout 2019, she just reached one quarterfinal and was battling with the shoulder injury. She ended her career at 145th rank. It was a very anti-climactic end to a great career.
