Hershey to Eliminate Synthetic Dyes from Snacks by 2027

Hershey has announced plans to remove synthetic dyes from snacks by the end of 2027. The decision reflects growing consumer demand for cleaner labels and aligns with upcoming health regulations aimed at reducing artificial additives in food products.

The move will impact popular Hershey-owned snack brands, including Dot’s Homestyle Pretzels, SKINNYPOP popcorn, and FULFIL protein bars. As synthetic dyes come under increased scrutiny, the company is taking early steps to reformulate products using natural color alternatives.

In April 2025, U.S. health authorities introduced new guidelines targeting the removal of synthetic food dyes. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary emphasized the potential links between artificial dyes and conditions such as ADHD, obesity, and diabetes. These health concerns have prompted many major food companies to reconsider their use of synthetic ingredients.

“Removing these colors is a natural next step in our program to ensure consumers have options to fit their lifestyle while maintaining trust and confidence in our products,” said a Hershey spokesperson.

Several other industry leaders, including General Mills, Conagra Brands, Nestlé USA, and W.K. Kellogg, have already started reformulating their products to exclude artificial colors. This growing trend indicates a significant shift in the food industry toward more transparent, health-conscious offerings.

The company’s decision to eliminate synthetic dyes from snacks is not just regulatory. It also reflects changing consumer behavior, as more people seek foods with simple, recognizable ingredients. Research continues to raise questions about the safety of synthetic coloring agents, especially their potential role in triggering hyperactivity in children and contributing to long-term health issues.

By committing to this transition, Hershey is positioning itself as a responsible and forward-thinking brand. The company aims to ensure that flavor, quality, and customer satisfaction remain unaffected as it transitions away from artificial dyes.

The change will be rolled out gradually, with full compliance expected by the end of 2027. Consumers can expect to see updated packaging and cleaner ingredient lists across Hershey’s snack portfolio over the coming years.

With this strategic move, Hershey joins a growing wave of food companies responding to public health initiatives and evolving market demands. The decision marks a pivotal step toward a more transparent and health-focused future in the snack food industry.
