Charlie Cassell Sets Record with 7-21 on ODI Debut

Charlie Cassell shattered a nine-year-old record on his debut in Men’s ODIs. The Scotland pacer claimed 7-21 in just 5.4 overs against Oman in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match on Monday. This outstanding performance broke Kagiso Rabada’s record of 6-16 set in July 2015.

Cassell was added to the squad after Chris Sole became unavailable due to personal reasons. He made an immediate impact with pinpoint accuracy. His very first ball in international cricket trapped former Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood lbw. Then, his second delivery breached Ayaan Khan’s defences, marking the first instance of a bowler picking up wickets off his first two balls in ODI cricket.

Two balls later, Cassell dismissed Khalid Kail. His sensational debut continued, yielding wickets consistently. By the 18th over, he had a five-wicket haul with the dismissal of Mehran Khan. This achievement placed him among an exclusive list of 15 players who had taken a five-for on their Men’s ODI debut.

However, Cassell didn’t stop there. He ran through the Oman tail to finish with 7-21. This became the best-ever bowling figures by an ODI bowler on international debut, surpassing Rabada’s record. Cassell now holds the seventh-best bowling figures by any player in ODIs.

Oman was bowled out for 91 in 21.4 overs after being asked to bat first. Pratik Athavale top-scored with 34, while only two other batters reached double digits. Cassell’s record-breaking performance was pivotal in restricting Oman to a low total.

Cassell’s entry into international cricket has set a high bar. His performance not only broke records but also demonstrated his potential to be a key player for Scotland. As cricket enthusiasts celebrate this achievement, Cassell’s future in international cricket looks promising.
