In a surprising turn of events, Dominic Thiem reached the finals of Australian Open as he won an intense game against his German rival, Alexander Zverev. It was of those rare semis where none of the ‘big three’ was playing.
It was a nail-biting match and it could have been anyone’s game. The difference was that the 26 years old Australian held his nerves at all the crisp moments of the game while 22 years old, ‘next generation’, failed to do so.
The scorecard reflects the same.
3-6, 6-4, 7-6, (7-3), 7-6 (7-4)
Dominic also became the first Australian to reach the final of Australian Open.
In a court-side interview, Thiem said, “It was an unreal match. Again, two tiebreaks, so tough and so close. It was almost impossible to break him — he had such a high percentage on his first serve. But (to reach) the Australian Open final is unreal, what a start to the season.”
While Zverev said, “I had 14 break points. That should be plenty. In the important moments, I didn’t play my best. He did. That’s where the match kind of went his way.”
The semi-final clash went on for 3 hours and 42 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena.

Novak Djokovic, seven-time champion of Australian Open won against Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals on Tuesday night. He is on a winning streak as he hasn’t lost any of his last 12 matches and this will be a huge challenge for Thiem to counter. This will be his 26th Grand Slam final.
