American fashion designer Ralph Lauren became the first American designer to be awarded the UK’s highest honor for foreigners. He has been made an Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) for his services to fashion.
Ralph Lauren awarded by Prince Charles in a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace. This is the crest recognizing his work not only within the fashion industry but also his generous work outside the fashion world. Lauren’s benevolent work includes majorly on cancer research and treatment. He became 5thAmerican to receive this award along with former President Ronald Reagan, Steven Spielberg, and Bill and Melinda Gates who have been awarded in the UK for tremendous efforts in their respective fields.
Ralph Lauren founded a company ‘Ralph Lauren Corporation’ in 1967 and he is the chief creative officer and executive chairman of the company headquartered in New York City. He said “I have always been inspired by the history, traditions and culture of Great Britain and the historic relationship our two countries have shared. This is one of the most meaningful honors bestowed at this very special moment in my 50th anniversary.”
The 79-year-old designer in his illustrious career spanning more than five decades received awards which include the Key to the City of New York by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the French Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honor), the Smithsonian’s James Smithson Bicentennial Medal, and many other awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America along with the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award.
Antony Phillipson, British Consul General to New York, said “In his storied career in fashion, business, and philanthropy, Mr. Lauren has played a key role in forging transatlantic cultural and economic connections,” This statement he made when award was originally announced in November. He further added “As creator and visionary of the Ralph Lauren brand worldwide, Mr. Lauren has been a vanguard for the global fashion industry and American style for nearly half a century.
“In addition, monumental philanthropic efforts, especially in the realm of public health, cancer research and treatment in both the US and the UK, have led to benefits felt by citizens around the world.”
