South Australian Wine Industry Welcomes Global Importers for Landmark Trade Visit

More than 100 local wine producers are set to showcase their finest labels this week as they host top international importers across South Australia’s iconic wine regions. From May 4 to 7, key members of the South Australian Wine Ambassadors Club (SAWAC) — a strategic trade initiative backed by the state government — will visit renowned wine destinations including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Clare Valley, and McLaren Vale. This four-day visit is designed to boost the state’s $1.9 billion wine industry by deepening trade ties and exploring new export opportunities.

Importers from key Asian markets such as Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand are expected to engage with producers from across the state, including emerging regions like Riverland, Langhorne Creek, and the Limestone Coast. A special exhibition at the National Wine Centre will provide further opportunities for interaction and collaboration.

Expanding Markets and Building Resilience

In addition to vineyard tours, the itinerary features stops at iconic venues like Seppeltsfield Barossa, Shaw + Smith, and Dandelion Vineyards’ Wonder Room. These visits are intended to highlight the unique characteristics that have helped South Australia earn global recognition for wine excellence.

Trade and Investment Minister Joe Szakacs said the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to broadening its export reach. “This program is making sure South Australia’s globally recognised wine is reaching new audiences and capitalising on new opportunities,” he said.

Szakacs pointed to a surge in premium wine exports to China over the past year, while noting that diversification remains key to long-term industry strength. Since SAWAC’s inception two and a half years ago, the initiative has helped 75 additional brands enter six new international markets, generating $2.14 million in initial orders.

Calling the club a crucial diversification tool, the Minister underscored its value amid global tariff uncertainties. With direct importer engagement now underway, the government sees this week’s visit as a timely step toward reinforcing the global presence and future resilience of South Australia’s wine sector.
