Multiple outlets report that British musician and former One Direction member, Liam Payne, has tragically died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires. He was 31.
According to a statement by Buenos Aires police to the Associated Press, Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel, located in the fashionable Palermo district, suffering “extremely serious injuries.” Medics confirmed his death at the scene.
Pablo Policicchio, spokesperson for the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires, stated that Payne had “thrown himself from the balcony of his room.”
Police had been called to the hotel following reports of an “aggressive man possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” Upon arrival, they reportedly heard a loud noise and discovered Payne’s body in the courtyard below.
Initial reports from Argentinian media indicate that police are investigating whether the fall was accidental or self-inflicted.
The director of Buenos Aires’ ambulance service, SAME, also confirmed the death to local media outlet TN.
Alberta Crescenti, head of Buenos Aires’ ambulance service SAME, confirmed to TN that Liam Payne suffered “injuries incompatible with life” following his fall. He declined to provide further details but noted that an autopsy would be conducted to determine more information surrounding the incident.
Payne had openly spoken about his battle with alcoholism. In a YouTube video posted in July 2023, he shared that he had been sober for six months after receiving treatment.
Global News has reached out to Payne’s representatives for comment but has not yet received a response.
Born in Wolverhampton, England, in 1993, Payne shot to stardom as a member of the internationally successful boy band One Direction. Alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, Payne gained worldwide fame before the band went on hiatus in 2016.
