Award-winning filmmaker, Quentin Tarantino has announced plans of converting his Oscar nominated motion picture, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, into a novel. The director has already acquired relentless acclaim for his filmmaking skills. According to Variety magazine, the phenomenal filmmaker has entered into a two part deal with publishing giant Harper Collins to bring this endeavour to fruition. This will be Tarantino’s first work of fiction in print.
A Significant Departure from the Movie
The announcement was made public by the director, when he shared a picture of his book deal as a teaser for his fans. The picture included the cover of the book in a library and was captioned with a teasing ‘coming soon’ comment. The story of this commercially and critically acclaimed film is centered around actor Rick Dalton who was once famous and wealthy due to his remarkable role on the 1950s television Western. However, now he is struggling to find meaningful work in Hollywood. He spends most of his free time with his easy-going best friend and longtime stunt double, Cliff Booth. Rick’s infamous neighbours are Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate- filmmaker and budding actress respectively, whose futures will be altered by the members of the Mason family. The film’s narrative builds from this premise.
According to sources, the book will not merely recapture the screenplay of the movie, but it will amplify the original tale. The fictional rewrite is also slated to add a fresh perspective to the narrative and is predicted to be ‘a shocking departure from the film’. The book is set to be published in the summer of 2021. The initial rollout of the book will be unmatched by any other hitherto novel’s release. It will be released in the paperback, digital, and e-book formats simultaneously, followed by a deluxe hardcover edition that will hit the markets in the fall of 2021.
Building the Dynamic Characters Further
The ace filmmaker expressed his thrill and excitement to explore the dynamic characters of the cinematic world further through the literary genre. Tarantino elaborated on this news further by propounding, “In the ’70s, movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading. And to this day I have a tremendous amount of affection for the genre. So as a movie-novelization aficionado, I’m proud to announce ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ as my contribution to this often marginalized, yet beloved sub-genre in literature.”
