Louis Vuitton has unveiled the return of its legendary Takashi Murakami collaboration, reimagined for a new generation with Zendaya as the face of the campaign. Launching January 1, 2025, the collection pays homage to the iconic Monogram Multicolore designs of the early 2000s while incorporating fresh elements for today’s luxury consumers.
A Modern Revival of a Cultural Phenomenon
First introduced in 2003, the Murakami collaboration became a hallmark of the Y2K era, famously sported by celebrities like Paris Hilton and immortalized in pop culture. Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO, noted the rising popularity of early 2000s aesthetics as inspiration for the relaunch. “This collection bridges the past and present, inviting a new audience to experience its magic,” Beccari stated.
The updated line includes over 200 pieces, from handbags and jewelry to unexpected items like skateboards. Prices begin at €90 and extend to ultra-luxury offerings such as bespoke trunks housing 33 Speedy bags.
Pop-Up Experiences Around the Globe
To celebrate, Louis Vuitton will host immersive pop-ups in cities including Tokyo, New York, and Milan. Visitors can explore Murakami-inspired cafés, interactive cinemas, and exclusive vending machines featuring collectible merchandise like trading cards and Tamagotchis.
In Seoul, a dedicated Murakami ice cream shop and photo booth will take center stage, while Milan’s Louis Vuitton-branded trams will function as mobile cafés and theaters.
Zendaya Leads the Charge
The campaign, photographed by renowned duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, showcases Zendaya styled in vibrant cityscape settings, embodying the spirit of the collection. Highlights include updated versions of the Speedy 25 and Capucines Mini, blending Murakami’s signature colorful motifs with contemporary design elements
Murakami praised Zendaya as the ideal ambassador, sharing his admiration for her performances in films like Dune and Spider-Man. “Her energy perfectly aligns with the playful yet sophisticated nature of this collaboration,” he remarked.
What’s Next for the Collection?
The launch will occur in two phases, with additional designs—such as the Cherry Blossom motif—set for release in March 2025. Enhanced printing technology ensures the patterns are more vibrant and precise than ever before, and collectible trading cards aim to attract younger audiences.
Luxury Market Optimism Amid Challenges
Although the global luxury market faces headwinds, Louis Vuitton is confident in the collection’s ability to resonate. Beccari emphasized, “Our mission is to bring joy and create lasting memories through our designs.”
The Takashi Murakami collection will be available for preorder in select regions starting Friday, with a global release scheduled for January 3. Combining art, innovation, and fashion, Louis Vuitton once again redefines what it means to be timeless.
