Working at a cosmetics counter during the day and doing bridal makeup on weekends, a Kearney native found shortcomings in the products she was using. That’s when she decided to create her own line.
Nichole Plugge, Girl Next Door Cosmetics owner and creator expressed, “Why can’t I do this, why can’t I make this very specific color that I want?” Between classes, Plugge spent her free time as a wedding makeup artist and working at cosmetic counters.
Inspired by her entrepreneur parents, Plugge decided to create her on own line, Girl Next Door Cosmetics.
She added that she wanted the brand to kind of embody natural beauty that you enhance with makeup but still feel really good about yourself.
The first product she created was a matte lipstick called Scarlet, inspired by her own life.
Plugge said while working with the manufacturer to create her formulas was easy, since she knew exactly what she wanted, it’s everything in between that’s been a tad tricky.
Plugge said, “The most challenging thing for me has been wearing all of the hats of a new business owner. You have to be an accountant and a photographer and a graphic designer and all of those things and I really had to learn a lot more about that stuff before I felt like, ‘Okay I can really jump in and do this.”
“I’m still learning, I’m still learning so much about all of those things but it’s definitely been a journey but I wouldn’t change it,” said Plugge. “I will continue to grow and learn about all of those things but the make up side of things, that just comes naturally to me.”
Friday, Girl Next Door Cosmetics will hold a pop-up-shop inside Edith Joi Boutique in Kearney from 4 until 6 p.m. Products can also be purchased online or at Scheels and Blown A Blow Dry Bar in Lincoln.r the Oscar nominations, which come less than 12 hours after these kudos wrapped.
