Elon Musk states that he has successfully tried their first human trial with Neuralink brain chip implant. The patient is said to be able to control a computer mouse using their mind.
This happened last month, in January, and now the patient is fully recovered and is being able to use a computer mouse using their thoughts which is an impressive invention.
“Progress was good, and the patient had made a full recovery, with no adverse neural effects that we were aware of. The patient was able to move a mouse around the screen by just thinking.” Is what Musk said in a Spaces event on his social media platform X.
Even though this is already a huge triumph and everyone is celebrating this unforgettable event, Elon Musk has said that he still has bigger plans for Neuralink and this is just an initial step which will lead to even more such initiatives. By enabling even more complex and advanced interactions, he wants to be able to control the mouse button using the patient’s thoughts.
The patient’s name and identity is yet to be revealed by Musk, and he also said during the Neuralink’s announcement in September, that the target individual for this experiment were the people who are suffering from quadriplegia which happens due to a cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Musk stated the people who will be benefitted by this device will be the people “who have lost the use of their limbs.”
This initiative got a boost when Neuralink got the approval from the Food and Drug Administration last May where they were granted permission to start human trials of its implants. Due to the possibility of the chip overheating, this idea was initially rejected by the FDA last March.
“In the future, we hope to restore capabilities such as vision, motor function, and speech, and eventually expand how we experience the world,” claimed Neuralink on their website.
