The world is progressing and at what pace! The past decade has been a hub of technological innovations which have changed the very way that we live our lives. But at the same time, a lot of these innovations have depleted the quality and quantity of resources on earth, giving rise to a phenomenal demand for sustainability. Now, the aim of most businesses is not only to prosper, but to contribute towards a better and greener tomorrow. Technological innovations in this domain have been extraordinary and they hold in themselves the power to convert this world into a better place to live. These innovations are paving the way for a brighter and sustainable future.
- The Smog Free Project
This project primarily represents the need for clean air and is the first smog vacuum cleaner in the world. Built by Daan Roosegaarde, this tower is approximately 23 feet high and is an architectural marvel. It sucks in the polluted air and then through a process of ionization releases back clean air to breathe in. Not only this, this technology also makes small rings out of the smog particles that have been collected over time. Today, this technology is being highly lauded and has received numerous laurels and is currently being used in a number of countries like South Korea, China, Netherlands, Mexico and Poland. It is one technology to look out for as it holds significant promise for the future.
- B-Droid: Robotic Bees
This is a very smart technology of robotic bees aimed at pollinating crops with almost the same efficiency as the original counterparts. The main use of this technology would be to increase the population of bees on Earth which has been drastically coming down these past few years. All the high labour intensive jobs would be done by these robotic bees. Development of this technology is attributed to the researchers at the University of Warsaw.
- Plastic Recycling through Pyrolysis
Not one but numerous technologies are in place for the recycling of plastic. Every year nearly 260 tons of plastic is used all across the globe giving rise to hefty amounts of pollution. A mere 16% of the total plastic used is recycled, raising alarm amongst everyone. Most of the plastic being used is one that is simply taken, made and then disposed. The plastic industry itself has now decided to intervene and move away from this approach. Out of the numerous options available, one that has been the most successful is pyrolysis that uses heat in the absence of oxygen to convert all plastic waste into liquid livestock, this is not only beneficial for the environment, but also proves to a be a boon economically.
- Blockchain
This technology is a relatively new one and is still in the nascent stages of its development, but it offers great potential. It is a distributed ledge system that will broadly promote sustainability by bringing in more transparency in the distribution process. One can ensure that all the products being used come only from fair trade. Moreover, it can also be used as an effective tracker for numerous purposes including the tracking of bins so that they can be changed whenever full.
- Autonomous Greenhouses
Artificial intelligence is the future for all aspects of our lives and agriculture is no exception. With the help of AI-powered technologies, autonomous greenhouses have been constructed that have been yielding the best of results. As of now, autonomous greenhouse is only at its natal stage, but it is expected that with time it will ease the process of horticulture and reduce the usage of resources as well as complex management procedures. Not only this, the crops grown with the help of this technology will be more nutritious and infused with vitamins, leading to better health for human beings.
Sustainability is the ultimate goal of every project because simply becoming technologically advanced is no longer enough. Organizations like the UN are also promoting sustainability as a goal and believe that everyone has a role to play. It is not about bringing in enormous changes all at once, rather it is about changing your lifestyle bit-by-bit. The above mentioned technologies are the ones which have the power to significantly impact our tomorrow, but at the same time, these are not all. Colossal amounts of effort are also being put in for the development of electrical vehicles both for public and private use that could have momentous and far reaching impact on the environment. It would be right to say that there has never been a greater push in the world for sustainability and rightly so, we are moving in the right direction and hopefully, better sooner than later we will achieve a healthier life for both the planet and its inhabitants.
