Bentley Begins Research on Sustainable and Recyclable Motors

Innovation is the sole key to remaining viable in the automobile industry. Automobile giant, Bentley has announced that it will be undertaking a research study spanning three years, with the aim of revolutionizing the sustainability of electric motors, further supporting a previous commitment made by the company to only offer hybrid or electric vehicles by 2026. This initiative is a step towards maintaining its exclusive, ace position in the market with a set of novel offerings with an environmentally conscious design.

In-Tune with the Other Objectives

The study will be titled Rare-earth Recycling for E-machines (RaRE). It will build on the work carried out at the UK’s University of Birmingham, in which magnets were extracted from waste electronics devices. Bentley is planning to upscale this project by extracting larger amounts of magnetic material, and then repurposing it as magnets for use in ancillary motors.

Matthias Rabe, Member of the Board for Engineering at Bentley Motors, asserted, “As we accelerate our journey to electrification, offering only hybrid or electric vehicles by 2026 and full electric by 2030, it is important that we focus on every aspect of vehicle sustainability, including sustainable methods of sourcing materials and components.”

The Need of the Hour

Sustainability needs to be in-built in the automobile designs of the 21st century. The vitality of this essential feature cannot be overemphasized. The aim of the RaRE study is to ideate and guarantee a step change in electrical recyclability. It will provide truly low voltage motors for several variegated applications. The company is confident that the results of this study will provide a basis for fully sustainable electric drives.

This is not the sole innovative stint undertaken by the automobile giant. Along with the RaRE study, Bentley is also participating in an awe-inspiring OCTOPUS research program. The aim of the OCTOPUS research study will be o develop an e-axle electric powertrain free from rare-earth magnets for use in the OEM’s upcoming EV variants. Investing in R&D has proven beneficial for the company in the past, and the results of the concurrent studies will illuminate us on the technical brilliance secured by the company in the course of the recent days.
