Sophia Anne Caruso Fashion’s Latest Muse

The Paris Fashion Week schedule of a new Celine muse leaves little room for downtime. 18-year-old actress Sophia Anne Caruso touched down in the city a few days ago and is due back on stage in New York on Tuesday evening

The actress’s visit marks a new chapter in the tale of this very modern muse. “Here’s the thing,” she explains. “Hedi and I know of each other virtually. We live on completely opposite sides of the world. I’m very excited to get to meet them tonight.

It’s easy to see why Caruso draws far flung fans. She grew up in Washington State and moved to New York eight years ago to pursue her stage career, finding her breakout role in Lazarus – which opened off-Broadway at the end of 2015 – David Bowie’s final work.

“Bowie was very involved,” she said. “Before I knew I’d got the part, I got a call from the director Ivo van Hove, saying, ‘If you get here in 10 minutes, David is here and he’d really like to meet you and hear you sing.’ I sprinted across town and I remember shaking his hand.

What song did she perform? “Fields of Gold, by Sting.” A couple of days later the call came. She was offered the part of “Girl”, along with being told that “David Bowie really loves you” – words which, she says, that still feel “completely crazy”.

When she’s not in Paris for Fashion Week – specifically Celine’s SS20 show – Caruso is playing Lydia in Beetlejuice, a Broadway “rock theatre” musical adaptation of Tim Burton’s cult 1988 film, in which she sings “a lot”.

“My Lydia is very different to the movie character originally played by Winona Ryder,” the actress explains. “You get more backstory about what she’s been through as a teenage girl who is working through the loss of her mother.”

Next up she’ll be releasing a book of her poetry and short stories, in between working on a secret TV project. If it sounds relentless, it is. “I anticipated [Paris] being a complete work break, but since I’m here for fashion week I’ve been going out every night,” she laughs. “I’m still in vacation mode though.” Which means discovering vegan dining spots in the city (the raw vegetable pad Thai at Kapunka Montorgueil, in the 2nd arrondissement, is a new favourite); or sipping wine at Loulou’s with playwright Jeremy O.
