US Extends China Tariff Truce by 90 Days

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending the trade truce with China for another three months, averting a potential escalation in tariffs and export controls that had unsettled global markets. The extension moves the truce deadline to November 10, allowing Washington and Beijing additional time to resolve ongoing trade disputes and potentially arrange a high-level summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.

Speaking at the White House, Trump emphasized the strength of his relationship with the Chinese leader, saying the two nations have been “dealing quite nicely.” The pause was announced just hours before the existing 90-day agreement — reached in May during talks in Geneva — was set to expire. That earlier deal had seen US tariffs on Chinese goods reduced to 30% from triple-digit levels, while China lowered its duties on American products to 10% and resumed exports of rare earth magnets vital to US industries.

Beijing Matches US Tariff Suspension

Trump confirmed the extension in a post on Truth Social, writing, “I have just signed an Executive Order that will extend the Tariff Suspension on China for another 90 days.” Almost simultaneously, China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that Beijing would also prolong its suspension of planned tariff hikes starting August 12, although it would maintain the 10% duty on US imports.

The coordinated move signals an effort on both sides to maintain stability while negotiations continue, and it comes amid speculation that a Trump-Xi summit could be arranged before year-end. Analysts note that the mutual tariff freeze could give breathing room for addressing more contentious issues, including technology export controls, market access, and intellectual property disputes.

The executive order reaffirmed Washington’s stance that the large-scale tariffs and export restrictions could be reinstated if progress stalls. Nevertheless, the extension offers a temporary reprieve for industries on both sides that have been caught in the crossfire of the US-China trade tensions.

With the new deadline set for November, attention will now turn to whether negotiators can convert this pause into a more lasting trade arrangement, potentially reshaping one of the most critical economic relationships in the world.
