Matthieu Blazy Appointed Chanel’s Artistic Director for 2025

Chanel has appointed Matthieu Blazy as its new artistic director, a major shift for the storied French luxury house, effective in 2025. The announcement, made on December 12, 2024, ends months of speculation following the departure of Virginie Viard earlier this year. Blazy, currently serving as creative director at Bottega Veneta since 2021, will now lead Chanel’s fashion activities, including haute couture, ready-to-wear, and accessories collections.

In a joint statement, Alain Wertheimer, global executive chairman, and Leena Nair, global CEO of Chanel, described Blazy as “one of the most gifted designers of his generation.” They highlighted his vision and talent, which they believe will enhance Chanel’s status as a leader in the luxury market. “His innovative approach to design and commitment to craftsmanship will drive Chanel in new directions,” said Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel Fashion and Chanel SA.

Blazy’s career includes significant roles at Raf Simons and Maison Margiela, where he earned a reputation for his avant-garde designs and meticulous attention to detail. He joined Bottega Veneta in 2020, initially as design director, and took over as creative director following the departure of Daniel Lee in 2021. Under his leadership, Bottega Veneta became one of Kering’s top-performing brands, achieving a 4% increase in sales to €1.23 billion in the first nine months of 2024.

“I’m excited and honored to join Chanel,” Blazy said in a statement. “I look forward to collaborating with the talented teams at Chanel to help shape a new chapter for the brand.”

Blazy’s move to Chanel marks a significant milestone for both him and the house. Chanel’s revenues hit $19.7 billion in 2023, a testament to its strong brand position globally. The appointment is expected to play a key role in Chanel’s ongoing growth, leveraging Blazy’s innovative designs to capture contemporary fashion trends while honoring the brand’s rich heritage.

This change comes at a crucial time for Chanel as it navigates the challenges of the luxury market. Blazy’s creative leadership is anticipated to drive the brand forward, building upon its storied past while infusing fresh energy and perspectives. As he takes over in 2025, Blazy will oversee 10 annual collections, including two ready-to-wear, two haute couture, two pre-collections, one cruise, one Métiers d’art, and seasonal lines like Coco Beach and Coco Neige.

Chanel’s appointment of Matthieu Blazy marks a bold move, highlighting the brand’s commitment to innovation and maintaining its position as a leader in the luxury fashion industry.
