The New Wave of Travelers: India’s Gen Z Eyes International Adventures

A recent study by Skyscanner, titled ‘First Trip with Skyscanner’, unveils a significant trend among India’s Generation Z, those aged between 18 and 25, showing a strong inclination towards planning their first solo international voyages. The report indicates that 47% of these young adults are eager to embark on leisure trips abroad, driven by a zeal for adventure and exploration.

The desire to explore new cultures and attend global events such as concerts and sports is notably high, with 49% prioritising these experiences. Financial independence is a critical factor, as 81% are prepared to schedule their first international journey soon after earning their initial paycheck. The study also notes that two-thirds of this demographic are committed savers, setting aside funds specifically for travel, whereas only 20% lean towards financial schemes like buy-now-pay-later options to fulfil their travel desires sooner.

Planning and Preferences: Insights into Gen Z’s Travel Behavior

Skyscanner’s survey sheds light on how these young Indians meticulously plan their trips. A significant 76% prefer having a detailed itinerary, and 73% make sure to book return tickets well in advance. Despite their readiness for adventure, 59% opt for well-known destinations to ensure a balance between exploration and comfort. Safety emerges as a paramount concern, with 63% ranking it over budget considerations.

Interestingly, despite the digital savviness often attributed to their generation, 65% of Gen Z travellers consult friends, and 48% turn to family members for travel advice, showing a preference for personal recommendations over online sources. Additionally, the study reveals a culinary curiosity among these travellers, with 43% seeking vegetarian-friendly options that offer unique dining experiences.

Skyscanner aids these young explorers with tools such as Price Alerts and Whole Month searches, helping them find the most economical travel days and keep track of flight price fluctuations. The ‘Everywhere’ feature also offers insights into the most affordable destinations globally, while the ‘Multi-City Flight Search’ allows for planning complex routes efficiently.

This trend highlights a shift towards more independent and culturally rich travel experiences among India’s youth, reflecting their broader aspirations for personal growth and global exploration.
