Reinforcing Security: Cobots in the Workplace

Introducing cobots in workspaces is an innovative and cost-effective way of employment as they work alongside humans and are much better in myriad ways than traditional industrial robots due to their simpler set ups.

In recent years, workplace security has been undergoing extreme metamorphosis with the unification of collaborative robots, popularly known as cobots. The cobots have a number of ways which can help a workplace enhance their security, exploring their capabilities, advantages, as well as their predicted implications.

The reason for inculcating cobots in a workplace was to make it more flexible, adaptive and more and deepened collaboration with humans whom they share the office space with. They are trained to be in close proximity to humans and are well-versed with numerous valuable applications which include security tasks which are total opposites of traditional industrial robots.

Cobots come with software-controlled sensors which help them detect objects, people and any collisions which make them suitable for this purpose. The software makes it safe as it shuts off the cobot if any unexpected happening is detected.

There are Different types of Cobots, Which are :

  • Power and Force limiting which are specifically made in order to reduce the risk of injury which come with soft, rounded corners so they can be used alongside humans. These type of cobots have built-in intelligent collision sensors and they automatically stop working if they come in contact with humans.
  • Another type of cobots is the Safety-rated monitored stop which are equipped with sensors which also stop working as soon as they come in contact with humans and the human workers can start them again with just a push of a button. Usually they are designed to detect a human and stop before getting too close to them.
  • Hand guiding cobots are capable of enabling a physical guide which can lead them through a task. When a programmer guides them with their hands, they work and complete the very task through this technique. Another thing to point out about these cobots is that they have a short learning curve which helps in reducing the downtime.
  • Speed and separation monitoring cobots employ sensors which have more advanced features except for maintaining a safe distance from humans. These cobots have a machine vision system that is continuously monitoring the two operational zones, which are – the warning zone, and the stop zone. They stop when they come in contact with a human and resume working again as soon as the person has left the area.

Some most common applications of cobots are :

  • Assembly
  • Dispensing
  •  Finishing
  • Machine tending

Cobots are typically used in industries like :

  • Electronics
  • Automotive
  • General manufacturing
  • Supply chain management
  • Healthcare
  • Plastics
  • Food and agriculture
  • Scientific research
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Furniture
  • Equipments
  • Packaging
  • Metal fabrication

Some benefits of cobots are :

  • Human worker safety
  • Flexibility
  • Accuracy
  • Enhanced productivity
  • Reduced production costs

Limitation of cobots

  • Lower payloads
  • Dependency in humans
  • Limited speed
  • Safety clearances

Although, this widespread use of cobots in workplaces raises ethical, societal, and regulatory considerations which need a thorough consideration including concerns like lack of privacy, job displacement, algorithmic bias  and governing the deployment of the utility of cobots. Ensuring transparency, accountability and fairness can help in a transparent and honest environment among the workers and stakeholders.

In conclusion, cobots are going to completely transform our work cultures, offering a versatile and effective solution for security and overall development. With an unseen blend of mobility, intelligence and collaboration, these cobots are making a dynamic entry in our everyday lives which will definitely be a transformative change although it still needs continuous improvement. But through responsible and effective stewardship and thoughtful integration, cobots can be a revolutionary discovery for workplace security which will create a safer and more productive environment to work in.
