Cambridge Wireless and Huawei Commence Partnership to Build the First Private 5G Testbed

Cambridge Wireless announces plans of teaming up with Huawei to build Cambridge’s first 5G mobile private network within the Cambridge Science Park. Cambridge Wireless (CW) is an international community for companies involved in the research and implementation of wireless technologies. Through this joint initiative with global tech giant Huawei, Cambridge Wireless will be able to undertake cutting edge digital research in the fields of clean energy, remote surgery and autonomous vehicles.

Significance of the Project

This 5G testbed is a 3 year partnership that will commence from January 2021 onwards. It will involve business support, joint events and digital training. The rationale for this ambitious team-up is truly commendable and if successful it will have a lasting impact on the future of humankind. The project has been undertaken to gauge the impact of wireless technology and its varied advancements on the economy and society of our times. Simon Mead, the CEO of CW said, “As home to one of the world’s most advanced R & D ecosystems, Cambridge is perfectly positioned for the rollout of next generation wireless technology and we’re delighted to be driving this initiative with our partners.”

The 5G testbed is set to be based at the Cambridge University-owned Science Park- currently home to more than 120 tech companies and scale-ups. More information about the operational modalities of this novel venture are available on the Cambridge Wireless website. On the other hand, Huawei hailed this novel partnership as a key part of its ongoing business commitment in the UK. Victor Zhang, Huawei Vice-President was quoted saying, “The Cambridge eco-system is recognised as a global leader in technology and we are excited to work with the talent and vision in this eco-system. We hope to enable Cambridge Wireless members to reach new heights by allowing them access to our state-of-the-art equipment and markets including China and beyond.”

Opportunities of Innovation

Cambridge has also partnered with Freshware and TusPark UK to accelerate the digitization of its Science Park. The new opportunities for innovative development will be produced by these partnerships to boost the creative drives of the participatory businesses and help them develop a competitive edge. Abhi Naha, the Chief Commercial Officer at CW was quoted saying, ““We are looking for organisations who would like to create, accelerate and test out new and innovative applications and products on the CW 5G Testbed.”
