The federal government has paused its incentive programme, which provided Canadians with rebates of up to $5,000 for purchasing or leasing electric vehicles.
Transport Canada announced on its website that the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Programme has been suspended as “funds have been fully committed.” Since its launch in 2019, over 546,000 vehicles have been purchased or leased with support from the programme.
In 2023, zero-emission vehicles represented 11.7 per cent of Canada’s automotive market, a significant rise from 3.1 per cent in 2019.
Canada has set ambitious targets, mandating that 20 per cent of all new vehicle sales must be electric by 2026 and 100 per cent by 2035.
The iZEV Programme was initially scheduled to pause on 31 March or when all allocated funding had been utilised.
