Masaba Gupta: Bright and Breezy

Women go through innumerable challenges in their lives. Being independent and free is still a far-fetched dream for many. Masaba Gupta, the celebrated designer, knows what it is struggle but she has written and carved out her journey of success. Breaking stereotypes and understanding what it feels like to be discriminated against, Masaba poured her anger and helplessness onto her designs and curated one of the most well-known labels in the fashion industry- House of Masaba.

Manoeuvring Through Troubled Waters

Born in the year 1989, Masaba has been fighting odds ever since. Life was never a cakewalk for her. Trying to leave a mark in multiple arenas, she started young, from wanting to play tennis professionally, to dancing and singing, and then finally becoming one of the best designers the world has ever seen, Masaba’s journey is nothing short of an inspiration.

Growing up Masaba faced backlash for her skin colour, for the longest period she was made to believe that only people with white skin could be successful. Proving otherwise was no easy task. With no business strategy but immense talent, Masaba at the age of 19 decided that fashion was her calling and showcased the immense potential that she held at the Lakme Fashion Week. Then, there was no looking back. She did face obstacles, but nothing could dishearten her. One after the other, she did numerous projects and put her heart and soul into everything.

I think I’m one of those few personalities who is actually saying things as they are. What’s in my head and heart is just out there and they connect to that. Since I started out really young, I speak what comes to my heart unapologetically and tick all the boxes that they’d like to. I voice their inner voice for them, and they feel like they are living through me – Masaba Gupta

The as Good as Gold Label – House of Masaba

As a young artist, Masaba started her own label in the year 2010 from where she slowly and steadily glided into the world of fashion. With her aesthetic sense and impeccable designing, House of Masaba today has reached unparalleled heights. What makes this label a never seen before one is that it does not shy away from the reality.

This label offers a fresh breath of air which is significantly hard to find in the world of fashion today as it moves past all the body stereotypes that have been put into place since decades. Masaba further enlivens this venture and with her remarkable marketing skills. Using the power of social media, Masaba has been attributed the title of being the first designer to ever conduct a fashion show on Instagram.

Every season is a new challenge for Masaba as she tries to do away with the normal and re-invent herself so as to break the monotony. In the eleventh year of its establishment, today this label serves the function of anywhere and anytime fashion in almost all parts of India.

Creating a Storm All Over: Artistic Triumph at its Best

Being the daughter of Indian superstar Neena Gupta, Masaba had a herculean task at hand. She had to prove herself worthy and create an image for herself by breaking free from the one that had been rendered to her by the world. Accoutred with a diploma in Apparel Manufacture and Design from SNDT, Masaba started her voyage of artistic triumph.

Releasing the importance and lack of clothing that was luxurious yet functional, Masaba decided to bridge the gap. This idea of combining the two most important elements brought her immense success and created a storm all over. The ingenious mind that Masaba is, she always made certain of the fact that all her clothing synchronised heritage as well as the cultural entities. Masaba is a designer like no other, she draws inspiration from the minutest of things in the daily life and curates something beautifully beyond belief.
