Vietnam is making strategic moves to position itself as a premier destination for the world’s affluent travellers, global investors, and high-skilled professionals. In a recent proposal, the Vietnam Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) recommended the introduction of three new visa categories to attract ultra-high-net-worth individuals, creative talents, and international business leaders.
The proposal includes the launch of a Golden Visa with a 5- to 10-year validity, a substantial increase from the existing 1- to 2-year terms. This visa aims to provide long-term residency to individuals who can contribute meaningfully to Vietnam’s economy, innovation ecosystem, and tourism development. A second category, the Investor Visa, would offer a 10-year term and a pathway to permanent residency after five years, specifically targeting those who commit to substantial business engagement within the country. The third, a Talent Visa, would cater to skilled professionals and creatives, offering a 5-year term and a simplified renewal process.
Building a Destination for the Global Elite
These initiatives are part of a broader campaign to transform Vietnam into a more attractive destination for long-term foreign residents. Pilot programs for the proposed visas have been suggested in key locations like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc—areas already popular with international visitors and investors.
Currently, Vietnam’s DT-class investment visas (ranging from DT1 to DT4) require high financial commitments, with the DT4 visa priced at approximately US$120,000 for one year, and DT1 costing nearly US$4 million for five years. These terms have often been perceived as limiting, particularly by investors seeking portfolio-based or passive investment routes.
In addition to the visa overhaul, the government is considering lowering immigration fees, granting further visa exemptions for strategic markets, and improving overall visa processing systems. As of now, citizens from 30 countries enjoy visa-free entry, and a recent expansion granted 45-day stays to nationals of 12 more countries.
Vietnam’s upcoming golden visa scheme is expected to enhance its appeal among Indian professionals, Southeast Asian enterprises, and global elites looking for new bases of living, innovation, and enterprise.
