admin Rafael Nadal who is at present the number two in the world has reached the 43rd quarter final of his life. In the Australian open, he beat Fabio Fognini to reach this feat.
This will be the first title in many years for Rafael in the Melbourne Park, the last one was in the year 2009. This is the thirteenth time that he has reached the quarter final in Australia.
He is third on that list, the top two spots have been taken by Roger Federer who has reached fifteen times and Newcombe who has a record of 14 quarter finals in the Australian Open.
If Rafael continues playing this way, he will reach the finals to compete with Novak Djokovic to see which one of the two capture the title.
Nadal in a statement said that winning this match and reaching the quarter finals is a positive start for him in this series. He is now fighting for his 21st major title in the sport. If he manages to win the series, he will also gain sole ownership of the men’s record. At present, Rafael and Federer share this honour.
In this match, Rafael had an advantage against Fognini since the very beginning. However, there were initial doubts with regard to Fognini given the fact that he had reported some back pain and muscle tightness earlier. Throughout the match, Rafael looked extremely sharp and prepared.
In the first set itself Rafael had a 3-0 lead which left many tennis players in astonishment. After that, Fognini also picked up pace, however after a fight of 46 minutes Rafael Nadal emerged victorious.
Nadal made sure that he made no mistakes in the last set and entered the quarter final. Fognini fought wonderfully in the first two sets against Rafael, however, in the third one it became exceedingly clear that Nadal would capture the game and finalise his spot in the quarter finals of the Australian open.
It is yet to be decided who will be playing the next match against Nadal but one can expect some interesting matches in this series!
