Cricket: Indian Off-spinner R Ashwin Finishes with Most International Wickets This Decade

Indian Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin finished the 2010s as the highest wicket-taker in international matches– 564 wickets across all formats. Whereas in the list of highest wicket-takers in the 2010s, England’s James Anderson and Stuart Broad finished at 2nd and 3rd spot with 535 and 525 wickets respectively. At 5th & 6th  positions finished by New Zealand pacers Tim Southee and Trent Boult with 472 and 458 wickets respectively.

Ashwin has made it a habit to pick up wickets since his Test debut against West Indies in 2011,  especially in dry and dusty conditions that support turn. Ashwin became only the seventh Indian to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. He took two five-wicket hauls and scored a century in that series and won the player of the series award.

In Test cricket Ashwin holds the record of becoming the fastest bowler to reach the 300-wicket mark. He has an impressive record with an average of 25.44. of 342 wickets in 65 Tests. In 2014,  Ashwin was an honoured recipient of the Arjuna Award and ICC Cricketer of the year in 2016 along with ICC Test Cricketer of the year 2016 in December 2016.

After nearly a year’s absence, R Ashwin had made a memorable comeback to the Test against South Africa, he went on to pick up his 27th 5-wicket haul in the 1st innings of the 1st Test. Ashwin finished with figures of 7/145 — the 5th time he picked up 7 wickets in an innings in Test cricket.

From 2017 West Indies tour Ashwin, a regular in India’s Test squad, has not played limited-overs cricket as selectors and team management felt that wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are better options. On June 30, 2017, Ashwin had last played ODI game for India against the West Indies in North Sound where he had returned figures of 3 for 28. R Ashwin was the only other Indian alongside his skipper Virat Kohli to have made the cut in Wisden’s Test Team of the Decade.
