Rhodes Scholarship: Victors’ Names Declared

The prestigious Rhodes Scholarship was awarded to three outstanding young students on 6th of November, 2020. The three students from New Zealand were awarded the coveted scholarship with an opportunity to pursue their post graduate education at the University of Oxford, UK. Liam Dennis, Rhieve Grey and Jessica Sutton are the lucky 2021 Rhodes Scholarship elects.

What is the Rhodes Scholarship?

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the oldest and most prestigious international scholarships that offers an opportunity for students who strive for all-round excellence. It offers them an opportunity for studying at the prestigious Oxford University. It covers the fees, accommodation charges and living costs for upto 3 years. The Rhodes Scholarship for New Zealand is a partnership between the Rhodes Trust and the Robertson Foundation. The application and process of selection is managed by the New Zealand Universities.

Meeting the Winners

The first awardee of the scholarship –Liam Dennis- is currently employed as a consultant at Boston Consultancy, Melbourne. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Te Herenga Waka, affiliated to the Victoria University, Wellington, sub-majoring in computer science and software engineering. He hopes to major in MSc in Energy Systems at the Oxford University. Liam explained his committed passion for education and future plans as, Following my studies at Oxford, I aim to help commercialise or accelerate the implementation of emerging research, and to support both established sustainability programmes in the UK and Europe and the rapidly developing efforts back home.”

The second recipient of the scholarship is currently pursuing a BA degree in Psychology from the University of Auckland. He has been accepted into the Clinical Psychology Programme of Oxford University. Evidence Based Intervention and Policy Evaluation will be the core of his studies at Oxford. He also plans to pursue a Masters in Public Policy.

Jessica Sutton is currently completing her BA in French and Law degree at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University, Wellington. She has also been accepted to work as a Judge’s Clerk at the Wellington High Court. She plans on studying Bachelors of Civil Law and Women’s Studies at Oxford. She wants to use this education to alleviate gender-based violence, especially as a part of her planned future collaborations with UN or Red Cross.

A Class Apart

All three of these students excelled in the fields of education as well as extracurricular projects and activities, giving them the much appreciated edge over other applicants. Liam works to reduce the local BCG footprint and has also built an interactive platform for Sir Peter Blake Trust. Rhieve volunteered for two years at the Mount Eden Corrections Facility, while Jessica is working as a member of the NZ Institute of International Affairs, Wellington.
