On Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledge to mandate mathematics in the curriculum to learn some form of it to the age of 18. Sunak seeking to reset the educational system amid health crises, the current industrial scenario, and dire poll ratings for the ruling Conservative Party. He put education transformation at the center of his domestic policy agenda as he tries to answer the call from his own lawmakers for a positive response for the UK.
The prime minister will announce his priorities for 2023 in his first set-piece speech of the year to reveal his goals for the enhancement of Britain’s future. This decision will help to improve poor numeracy levels by mandating all school students in England to study mathematics till they are 18 years of age. The government said that around 8 million adults in England have the numeracy skills of primary school children and only half of 16-19 years old students study mathematics at all. 60% of the students do not have basic math skills at age 16.
The prime minister is hoping that the new school policy will encourage more inspiring messages from the Tory Party, the reason behind Labour Opposition by some 20 points in recent polling. It is also mentioned that mathematics will not be compulsory at A-level, and some core maths and technical knowledge are also being explored in new ways. PM officials said it was unable to declare a perfect time for when the modification would come into effect. Just highlighted it will initiate prior to the upcoming election.
Sunak believes every opportunity began with education and providing the highest possible standards of education is the top-most priority for him, this is the reason Rishi Sunak is involved in politics. “One of the foremost changes in mindset we require in education is to reinvent our approach to numeracy, students require more analytical skills than ever before as the growing competition everywhere and letting our children out into this competitive world without those skillsets is letting our children back down,” said Rishi Sunak in his speech.
