The Covid-19 pandemic produced several indelible changes in the way the masses consume entertainment and the way such content is produced. Traditional TV viewership witnessed a sharp rise during the initial lockdown measures imposed by governments globally. As we poise ourselves for the upcoming new year, a hearty line of television shows await their addition to our watch-lists.
Much Awaited Content
Full-House famed John Stamos is set to star in an ABC Studios produced Disney+ dramedy series centered around a temperamental basketball coach who is forced to take on a new position at an elite, all-girls private school after losing his job. It will be available for streaming by early 2021.
Netflix will also release its six episode drama series entitled ‘Clark’, starring Bill Skarsgård as Swedish criminal Clark Olofsson, a controversial personality best known for inspiring the phrase “Stockholm Syndrome.” The show will be based on Olofsson’s autobiography that encapsulates his life’s journey as well as his time behind bars.
‘Dopestick’ is another anticipated story that portrays the humanizing side of the opioid crisis. Based on the bestselling book of the same title, the show will star Rosario Dawson and Michael Keaton.
Marvel’s Enticing OTT Lineup
Marvel’s list of releases on the Disney+ platform will make the upcoming months exceedingly exciting. With the release of the initial trailers and teasers in the first week of December, Marvel unveiled its much awaited list of shows that extend the MCU on the OTT platform. ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ will pick up the storyline after the events of the endgame with Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their titular roles as the Falcon and the Winter Soldier respectively. ‘WandaVision’ is also set to hit the OTT platform on the 15th of January 2021. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bethany will also reprise their roles for this MCU extension. ‘Loki’ will be another much anticipated Marvel Studios Production launching on the Disney+ forum in 2021, with Tom Hiddleston playing the titular role of the God of Mischief: Loki.
A Never-Ending List
Several other shows are slated to release next year including ‘Severance’, ‘Lupin’, ‘Maid’, ‘Scenes of a Marriage’, and others. A significant number of animated series will also be released next year including ‘Monsters at Work’, ‘What If’, ‘The Great North’ and others. The much awaited televised production of the 2013 novel ‘Americanah’ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is set to commence in 2021. Earlier the show was slated to star Lupita Nyong’o in the lead role, however, due to scheduling conflicts related to the Covid restrictions, the actress dropped out of the project. The fate of the project is still unclear.
