On the last Friday, it was a claimed victory of Brexiteers as the UK went away from the European Union drinking champagne in the celebration of the same.
The day finally came after three and a half year of pushing for Brexit since the 2016 referendum. Many Brexiters were celebrating amid rain while many projected indifferent emotions.
A Leading Leave campaigner, Nigel Farage, while addressing the crowd said, “The war is over: we have won. This is the single most important moment in the modern history of our great nation.”
The Trade Bloc’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, stated to reporters that the UK can only get past tariffs and quotas by agreeing to maintain open and fair competition with its largest export market.
He said, “Will [Britain] continue to adhere to Europe’s societal and regulatory model in the future, or will it seek to diverge? The UK answer to this question will be fundamental to the level of ambition of our future relationship and the UK must know this.”
Angela Merkel, the Chancellor, and Emmanuel Macron, the French President, felt that this was a sad moment and a turning point in the history of the European Union.
Though the flag was taken down at the EU headquarters, not much is going to change before the end of 2020.
Until 31st December 2020, when the transition period comes to an end, most EU laws are supposed to be in force. Also, the UK is looking to sign a permanent trade agreement with the EU, in the same way, Canada executed with the EU. While this is what the UK looks for, the EU leaders have reminded that this is a very tight deadline and it might not just happen.
