Goal setting is important for your personal, professional and social growth. Let’s talk about professional growth. Jeff Boss, a leadership contributor writes, “The beauty of knowing why something works makes you more willing to embrace it and more informed, “It is of paramount importance to the other two. Analyze the failed & successful people around you. They could be your friends, neighbors, relatives, colleagues, boss or even some strangers. Find out, why do they enjoy success in personal and social life? Are they professionally successful too? Yes. Is it their professional victory, which affects their personal and social success? Well, yes again. It is difficult to find a person with personal and social success without having success in his profession. People like Tejaswi B. could be an exception, when she said, “Having a happy and balanced personal life is one of the pre-requisites for having a successful career.” Your professional or work department is the most important. You can afford only success in this department, however small it looks to you. Let me explain with examples:
Last year, I was on a beach with my 6-year-old daughter. She insisted that both of us should build a house from wet sand. With all enthusiasm, I nodded yes. We started to build a 2-foot bigger ‘King Fort’. She was eager to give various shapes and make a door, windows, floor of ‘King Fort’. We worked for nearly two hours. Our combined efforts turned zero. The ‘King Fort’ turned out to be ‘servant house’.
My wife came. An interior designer by profession, she saw this ‘masterpiece’ and grinned. She asked, ‘What do you want to make from sand?’ ‘A King Fort’, my little one replied immediately. Then my wife suggested some creative modification. She said, ‘when you build some masterpiece in the future – make a master plan in advance.’ ‘But why’, I asked and continued, ‘It is just for fun’. My wife thought for a while and replied, ‘because every masterpiece requires a master plan to build it’.
Take chance, but dream big. It pays to dream big. Here is an alphabet to alphabet extract from the life plan of Mr. Sinchan. He is a perfect example of today’s startup generation and their clarity in vision. He planned this sketch 4 years back.
‘I want my own 4000 sq ft home on the 21st floor of 23 story building. It would be 2 layered home with 4 rooms, 4 big balconies, and spacious 300 sq kitchen (I like cooking!). I will have a separate open terrace to do ‘gardening’ and one room, especially to fit the mini-home theatre system. And yes, one room to do prayer every morning. My home will have a river view, which I always want.
My home would be a complete package for 4 of us (including my 2 cute kids!) to relax, re-energize and re-born every day. It would be an amazing meeting place for me to meet my friends and to unwind myself.
8 years from now, I want to be in a position and state of mind, to spend 10days exclusively for my spiritual well-being. I want to purify my heart and myself by carrying out spiritual and physical fasting, reading regional scriptures, taking guidance from my ‘Guru’. Surely, all these plans to lead blissful life depend on how I plan and achieve my goals in my professional life. I have to remain on my toes to accomplish my dream life.’
4 years on, today Sinchan has 100 people working for him in 5 cities. His company’s sale is 7 million USD, which could be 15 million by this year-end and 50 million USD in the next 3 years. His dream home and dream life look a certain reality.
Get the point? These 3-Ds (departments) of your life are closely interconnected. They are inter-dependent and not independent in the most cases. And your work-life is the ‘head’ of this 3-D system. If you excel in your work-life, your personal and social life will be taken care of automatically. Even you may end up building new home of your dream. A person with better professional success leads to good personal and social success. The word ‘work-life balance’ is prevalent now. What is it? A combination of professional and personal life. You need astute mastery over your work. Work as a leader and finish your work in the stipulated time.
