UAE Introduces Blue Visa to Drive Sustainability and Attract Global Talent

A Strategic Initiative for Green Innovation

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has unveiled a new visa category called the Blue Visa, designed to attract individuals with exceptional contributions to environmental protection, sustainability, and clean energy. Launched in 2025 after its initial announcement in 2024, the Blue Visa is a multiple-entry permit valid for 180 days, with the potential to extend to a 10-year residency. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s ambitious plans to position itself as a global hub for sustainable development and green innovation.

Administered by the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP), the Blue Visa targets scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and specialists who are actively working in environmental sectors. Applicants are required to provide evidence of their accomplishments in sustainability, climate change mitigation, or clean energy projects. The program aims to draw top talent capable of contributing to the UAE’s environmental goals, reinforcing its stance as a leader in sustainable economic development.

Application Process and Economic Impact

The application process for the Blue Visa is managed through the ICP’s smart services platform, allowing applicants both inside and outside the UAE to apply. The process involves filling out personal information, submitting relevant documents, and paying the necessary fees. According to the ICP, the entire application process takes approximately seven minutes, with visa processing completed within one working day.

“The Blue Visa not only fosters sustainable development but also encourages global collaboration in environmental fields,” stated an ICP spokesperson.

The introduction of the Blue Visa is expected to impact the travel and investment sectors, as it creates a pathway for long-term residency for individuals specialising in sustainability. By attracting such talent, the UAE aims to bolster its green initiatives, increase investment in clean energy projects, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.

Furthermore, the Blue Visa complements the UAE’s broader economic diversification strategy, attracting professionals and investors who can contribute to emerging green industries, further positioning the country as a global leader in sustainable innovation.
