At the 22nd World Congress of Food Science and Technology, held in Rimini, Italy from September 8–12, Hifood, a subsidiary of the CSM Ingredients group, received the prestigious Global Food Industry Award in the “Most Innovative Process” category. The company was recognised for its groundbreaking innovation, Micro Protein, a line of micronised, plant-based, allergen-free, and clean-label proteins. Micro Protein was also a finalist in the “Most Innovative Ingredient” category, further solidifying its importance within the industry. The congress, organised by the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST), gathered more than 150,000 food scientists and technologists from across the globe.
Recognising Innovation in Food Technology
Each year, the IUFoST Global Food Industry Awards honour industry pioneers who excel in areas such as product innovation, packaging, nutrition, and food safety. Hifood’s achievement stands out as an example of cutting-edge technological advancement in the food industry. According to Emanuele Pizzigalli, Hifood’s chief innovation officer, Micro Protein was developed to address the growing need for plant-based protein enrichment in food products without significantly altering taste or texture. The company leveraged proprietary micronisation technologies, enabling them to produce extremely fine protein particles—smaller than 30 microns—which eliminate the sandy texture often found in traditional protein-enriched products.
This development is particularly timely as demand for plant-based protein continues to rise globally, driven by increasing consumer awareness of health and sustainability. The World Congress highlighted this trend by showcasing companies that are leading the charge in offering clean-label, allergen-free options.
A Breakthrough in Protein Enrichment
Hifood’s Micro Protein offers a unique, allergen-free, and clean-label solution that provides over 70% protein content. Available in two variants—Micro Protein P6 and Micro Protein P11—the solution can be easily integrated into a variety of products, including baked goods, desserts, and beverages. Christian Sobolta, managing director of CSM Ingredients, stated that this award highlights the role of innovation in the food industry, demonstrating that technological advancements can help meet consumer demand for healthier, protein-rich products without sacrificing taste or texture.
The success of Micro Protein serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to driving forward the food industry’s evolution. By blending scientific innovation with a focus on sustainability and health, Hifood is paving the way for future food solutions that benefit both consumers and producers. This recognition underscores the significance of purpose-driven innovation in addressing current market needs and inspiring future advancements in the global food industry.
