Joint Initiative for Online Learning Launched by the Chinese and German Universities

The world of education has undergone unforeseen alterations over the course of the by-gone year. The pandemic has left an indelible mark on the educational landscape. Educators all around the world are trying to cope with the new normal initiated by this on-going health crisis. Some educators are also trying to utilize the few glimmering opportunities on the horizon. Following this trend, recently a similar collaborative endeavor was launched by the Shanghai Open University and Fern Universität in Germany.

Details of this Novel Project

An open online course website has been jointly launched by the Shanghai Open University, in China and Fern Universität in Hagen, Germany. The portal titled cgonline.org.cn, is a remote learning platform that will serve students in both the countries. This project was approved back in 2019 at the Sino-German Dialogue Forum with an aim to create a communication portal between the two institutions, promote cooperation in online education and talent cultivation between the two countries, and support development of both Chinese and German enterprises. The Covid pandemic has further enhanced the need for such collaborative endeavors on the international platform.

Courses and Collaborations for the Project

Several institutions are partnering with the Shanghai International Studies University including the Tongji University, Shanghai University for the Elderly, the Open University of China’s College for Senior Citizens, Alibaba, World Urban Planning Education Network and Cognos International in order to provide more than 30 courses in Chinese, German and English.

The courses are set to cover 5 areas of study- business, digital economy, culture, smart city and language — and will also include classes on Beethoven in China, how Chinese employees think and act, how to make Chinese pastry and learning German. The platform provides automatic translations of course materials, as well as tailored courses for universities and companies in China, Germany and other countries to teach students and train employees. The countries plan to expand this novel endeavor even further in the course of the next few years. Other courses will be added to the already existent list. The project is also expected to scale further as new collaborative partners are invited to join the venture.
