A new feature is being added to the highly popular Google Maps wherein the drivers using the app will be automatically suggested routes which are eco-friendly. It will first be rolled out in the United States where it will be tested for the efficiency and the convenience of all the drivers.
Then in a systematic way it will be introduced to the other countries as well. This new feature is being inculcated into the app by Google in order to help the climate.
The feature will be primarily looking at the carbon emissions and the route with the least would be suggested. These carbon emissions include traffic, slopes and other factors in accordance to the particular areas.
Google is making this feature as a default setting in the app, that is, the user will have to go and opt out if they do not want the eco friendly route. Even in the other options, the app will provide options to the users. The different alternatives will be shown and their carbon emissions will be highlighted.
The director of product at Google Russell Dicker said, “what we are seeing is for around half of routes, we are able to find an option eco-friendlier with minimal or no time-cost trade-offs.
This will make the travellers go on routes that have almost zero emission or comparably low.
Not only this, with the help of the new update another feature will also be included in the app which is comparing the different modes of transport. That means that Google maps will have an option wherein the driver can select what vehicle is being used- car, bikes, public transit or others and the route that is best for that mode of transport.
It has also been shown that people do prefer low emission areas for travel. This update will also include indoor AR directions, grocery pickup integration, eco routing and the air quality layers among other updates.
Google maps is an easily available app and the features offered are all free to use.
