Tesco Joins the Cause of Feeding the Vulnerable this Festive Season

The festive joy of the upcoming season has been marred by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, supermarket giant, Tesco is trying to bring back the joy of giving with its brand new initiative that is set to launch today. The campaign plans to ensure that no family goes hungry during this celebratory season. The Tesco Food Collection is encouraging common people to donate to the Trussell Trust and FareShare. The foodbanks of Trussell Trust are expected to give out six emergency food parcels every minute to people in dire crisis this winter.

The Campaign

Although this donation campaign has been in operation for several years, the scale this year is unparalleled. The food collection made last year totaled to over 3 million meals. Tesco’s head of community, Claire De Silva was quoted saying, “Every year Tesco customers across Cumbria are incredibly generous. But this year is not a normal year, and the two charities we work with need to provide more food than ever this Christmas.”

Tesco has launched the collection process in its Express stores today, while the same will commence in the bigger stores from Thursday onwards. The slated deadline for donating long-lasting food items is Saturday evening. After the donations are made, Tesco will be topping the collection with an additional 20% cash infusion. Moreover, in the same press interview, Claire also noted that a single can of tuna may not seem to be sufficient as donation, but if enough number of people engage in making these small donations, their collective ensemble makes a remarkable difference to a family in need.

Salience of this Noble Initiative

Trussell Trust Chief, Emma Revie said, “The pandemic has shown the power of what happens when we stand together in the face of adversity and how much people are willing to give in order to support their local community.” She also acknowledged the help and support of Tesco and its loyal customers. Their invaluable aid and donations will enable the foodbanks in the Trust’s network to provide the best possible help to people in need during the upcoming periods of Thanksgiving and Christmas. These donations will make an indelible difference in communities across the UK.
