A coral reef taller than the State Building, the Sydney Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers has now been discovered, it is around 1,600 feet high. This reef is the first one of its type to be discovered in almost 120 years in the off North Queensland waters.
This exploration was made by using a robot named “SuBastian”, a group of scientists livestreamed the entire exploration on YouTube and the website of Schmidt Ocean Institute.
In accordance with the press release, this reef is the said to be the latest addition to the already existing seven tall detached reefs in the Australian waters. This blade like reef is 1.5 kilometres wide and lies 40 metres below the ocean surface and is also six kilometres from the edge of the Great Barrier Reef.
In an official statement Beaman, one of the scientists stated that they were surprised and elated by what they have found.
A healthy ecosystem was found and it was thriving with a blizzard of fish when found. This discovery has come after a study conducted had found out that the Great Barrier Reef had lost more than half of its coral in the last three decades.
A 3D map was also designed for the reef and the scientists also felt that the discovery was very visually witness was absolutely incredible.
The northern section of the Great Barrier Reef suffered from bleaching in the year 2016, but this detached reef had no display of evident damage. The process of bleaching occurs when the temperature of water rises that also forces the coral to expel the living algae which then causes the reef to calcify and turn white in colour.
The Great Barrier Reef which is near this newly discovered one is 2,300 kilometres down of Australia’s northeast coast. It is the most spectacular and extensive coral reef ecosystem in the world as stated by UNESCO in the year 1981.
This sure is a marvel and would be sure a treat to the yes for all tourists and a significant selling point for the already marvellous and extensive reef.
