Union of European Football Association (UEFA) has announced to postpone European Championship which was to be held this year due to coronavirus outbreak and this has led to them announcing that it will be organized in 2021 between 11th June and 11th July.
This Football tournament was to start in Rome, Italy, on June 12 and 12 different cities across the European continent were to host games.
An emergency meeting of European football’s governing body took place on Tuesday to adjudge the tournament to be played next year. This will allow domestic tournaments to end before the start of the tournament.
Across the globe, sports tournaments and international summits are getting cancelled due to the deadly and very contagious coronavirus and have caused a loss of billions of dollars on an international level. Italy, France and Spain are going through a lockdown as there is a severe impact of coronavirus on these three nations specifically and millions of citizens of these nations are in their homes trying to lessen the impact of the virus.
“We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent,” said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
“It is at times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity and altruism.
“The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and, in that spirit, UEFA tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football.
“There was a real spirit of co-operation, with everyone recognizing that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result.” UEFA is yet to provide a judgment on the European Club Competitions status for 2020.
