Shinzo Abe Firm on ‘Not’ Cancelling Olympics Due to COVID-19

Shinzo Abe, Japanese Prime Mister, hinted that he is firm on not cancelling the Tokyo Olympics 2020 due to Coronavirus pandemic but can postpone it. Postponing is “not an option” because it is the biggest global sports event.

IOC, International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced that it will work hard towards making the arrangements up to the mark to make Olympics possible and will take all the necessary steps to stop the coronavirus and protect the health of those involved in this grand event.

Abe talked about this in the Parliament on Monday. According to the Nikkei Asian Review,he said: “If the IOC’s decision means it becomes impossible to hold [the Olympics] in a ‘complete form,’ as I have previously said, then a decision may have to be made to postpone them.”

His comments on cancelling the event as “not an option” were the reverberation of the statement by IOC executive board a day before his speech in Parliament. The board is also firm on not cancelling the event as according to them it “would not solve any of the problems or help anybody. Therefore, cancellation is not on the agenda.”

The Tokyo Games are to start from 24th July and Japan is stressed by international pressure on cancelling the event.

Cities across the globe are facing shutdown to curb the spread of COVID-19 and this is making things hard for Japan and IOC. Major parts of Europe are shut with severe effects in the USA and Asia and the Middle East. Italy has taken over China in terms of the Death toll even though it is nowhere near China in comparison to China’s population. The deadly and super-contagious virus has infected more than 294,000 people around the world and over 180 countries are said to have found the virus in people. More than 12,900 have lost their lives to the virus according to the data provided by the World Health Organization.
