Early data released by the US based company Moderna shows that 95% effectiveness against the virus and protects the individual. This vaccine is another potential candidate after the recent announcement by Pfizer claiming 90% effectiveness.
Both these vaccines hold the power to end the pandemic and bring the world back to normal. To come out with such vaccines in such a short span of time was very difficult and both the companies took the road of innovation and experimentation to come up with their respective vaccines.
Moderna says that it is a great day and more data related to the vaccine will be released shortly and soon it would be ready for use for the entire world. However, all of this is subject to the later data and hence if the vaccine receives the required approval.
This trial included a whopping sum of 30,000 people, half of which were given two doses of the vaccine with a gap of two weeks and the other half received dummy injections. In such a scenario 94.5% reacted positively and developed immunisation. The overall results have been phenomenal and it is believed that this vaccine will lead us back to our normal lives.
Another advantage of this vaccine, if successful, will be that it only needs to be refrigerated to safeguard its potency whereas Pfizer required a minimum temperature of -70 degrees to be stored which provided a logistical problem for various countries across the globe as they did not have room for such high levels of storage.
In the coming weeks, Moderna plans to make 20 million doses of the vaccine for the United States and it also hopes to tie up with other countries across the world and hopes to make one billion doses for the same purpose.
However, one significant question that remains unanswered is how long will this immunity last, but this is something that cannot be announced just yet given the fact that all the volunteers who received doses of this vaccine will have to be followed for quite some time before we can know the duration.
However, with the coming of two vaccines the world is instilled with hope that this pandemic will soon be over and for good.
