CNBC reported that the US-based giant, Amazon, filed to get the trademark for “Amazon Pharmacy” in Canada, the UK and Australia which can be a signal that it is looking to expand its prescription based drug selling in other countries. Amazon filed for the Canadian patent on 9th January 2020. The trademark lists other areas including surgical, medical dental instrument and pharmaceutical and also medical and veterinary preparations where Amazon might enter.
The filing of Australian trademark on the line of Canadian trademark appeared on the website for IP Australia and also on the UK’s intellectual property office.
PillPack is which is owned by Amazon. Its spokesperson confirmed the filing of trademark and informed that it has also filed for the trademarks in countries like Brazil, China, Egypt, the EU, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey, and the UAE.
He also added, “We are always considering ways to delight customers in every market we serve. At present, our focus is on growing PillPack and offering a better pharmacy experience for customers in the United States.”
These early signs doesn’t give a clear image of what is in the bank for the customers and it doesn’t confirm the expansion process. It is still too early to talk about medical expansion as Amazon launched their in this field late in 2019 and the plans are still on paper.
