Health Canada recalls plush toys on Christmas Eve due to choking hazard

As Canadians embrace holiday festivities, Health Canada has issued a warning regarding a choking hazard associated with certain plush toys for children.

On Christmas Eve, Health Canada recalled 120 Mother and Baby plush toys sold by Toronto-based Chantia Sales. The recall involves elephant, giraffe, lion, tiger, and panda toys featuring mother-and-baby designs.

These toys, manufactured in China, were sold in Canada between May 2023 and December 2024. Health Canada’s evaluation revealed that the toys failed to meet safety standards under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.

The agency highlighted that the hard plastic eyes could detach, posing a choking risk to young children. As of 16 December, no injuries or incidents had been reported.

Canadians are urged to immediately stop using the recalled toys and return them for a refund. The affected items bear the product number P273585 and UPC code 8140239986.

Notably, children’s toys, including plush toys, are part of the federal government’s two-month “tax holiday” introduced on 14 December.
