Global Food Passport Initiative Launched to Safeguard Food Businesses

As the world grapples with the new normal of travel restrictions, a novel initiative has been undertaken by the city of Salisbury, Australia to ameliorate the pains of this prolonged travel ban. The city of Salisbury has partnered with a myriad number of local food businesses to offer residents a potent taste of the diversified global cuisine. Entitled the new Global Food Passport Initiative, this endeavour seeks to make international cuisines -prepared by the brilliance of local chefs- available to the doorstep of home-bound customers.

How Does the Passport Work?

A partnership has been created between the city of Salisbury and local food businesses to offer people exclusive deals on a wide variety of dishes from the Asian, Mexican and Italian cuisines. The deals will also extend to beverages and confectionaries. These Global Food Passports will be made available at the stores of the participating businesses as well as local community centers. People can collect them from these venues to participate in this one-of-a-kind initiative. When the passport holders unlock a deal in the book, they can collect the corresponding stamp at the store. They can then use this stamp to participate in an online draw that promises the victor a $100 food voucher. The campaign is set to commence on the 1st of November 2020. It will be continued until the end of this year.

The Rationale of the Initiative

As the Covid-19 pandemic ravages through continents, various sectors of the economy have faced unprecedented upheavals. The food industry has been equally hard hit during these trying times. With no end of the pandemic in sight, developing innovative strategies to combat the adverse effects of the concurrent health crisis becomes imminent. The Global Food Passport initiative is one such local drive that seeks to promote both the welfare of customers as well as improve the standing of food businesses. With international travel restrictions, customers too have been missing the taste of international delicacies. In his public statement, Mayor Aldridge also emphasized the same as he stated, “Food businesses have had a challenging year, with the restrictions and pressure brought on as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.” She also talked about the benefits of this novel initiative by saying, “The Global Food Passport is a win-win for customers and business owners, and another great reason to shop local when eating out between now and the end of the year.”
